Loss of Validation on wikipedia

I have just learned that the wikipedia article on violet wands, is gone without any possibility of appeal, 14 years after it was originally written. This loss of validation on wikipedia is a loss to the community. Who among us knew it was up for deletion? NO violet wand experts had a chance to fight for this resource to remain on the web.  We weren’t watching or protecting our information. The wikipedia article –corroborated on by many in the violet wand and kink community– was an important education resource for lay people researching violet wands. I have reposted the original article in the violet wand information category so that it is not lost forever.

This is the internet archive of the last known good version of the article on wikipedia:violet wand. The article was originally written in 2004 by Dlloyd. Wikipedia’s exacting records history show expert content contributors to the wiki over the years included such notables as Lady Robin, Violetwanda, OldFart, DMT, HaloInverse, Hogtied, TheRavenQueen, and DecryptedNight and more, many of them IVWG members past or present. In addition, general wikipedia editors improved syntax, grammar and wiki standardization of the article from time to time, while leaving the material information untouched as written by violet wand experts.

In July 2016, NickandMorphia, a reseller of used violet rays in the UK, tagged the article as ‘conflict of interest’ specifically calling out the reference source citation to the International Violet Wand Guild’s educational site. This use of an official tag prompted wikipedia’s administrators to delete the entire Violet Wand article, since most of the citations were to the Guild’s website. After the deletion was appealed, wikipedia administrators and editors held a final vote to merge a stripped-bare version of the Violet Wand article with the article for Erotic Electro Stimulation– resulting in only a brief few-line mention of violet wands —as a subset of e-stim–. All appeals have been exhausted without ever having any input from the actual violet wand community. The complete record of these actions and results is detailed on wikipedia.

This loss of validation of violet wand educational information in a major public forum is a blow to the kink community in general and the violet wand community in particular. This loss of validation has moved us deeper into the shadows again, after BDSM has come such a long way in the public eye.

The revision history shows that for the period 2013-2018 the article was generally accepted as correct in content, with few edits or additions. The main source citation for the article was always the information collated by the International Violet Wand Guild since that is the organization that did the research, did the work, spent the money, developed and fine-tuned the techniques, set standardized sizes and terminology and safety information.  The Guild was, and is, the source of most violet wand information as a collaborative membership, though the information has spread since the Guild’s standardization of it years ago.  This was the Guild’s work- to spread education and information and archive it for violet wand users in future. Unfortunately, they couldn’t protect this. Nobody even knew what underhanded efforts to take take it down were going on…

The wikipedia article remained stable in its current version for 5 years before the NickandMorphia action to flag it.

Sadly, the revision history of the article also shows that over the years, NickandMorphia repeatedly tried unsuccessfully to get a link to their commercial-only site added to the article, but were rebuffed every time by wiki general editors and anti-spam bots. Their final commercial link attempt and subsequent petty ‘conflict of interest’ flag against the educational, non-profit International Violet Wand Guild and cited sources like this site, which has resulted in the loss of validation and this valuable information to kinksters everywhere, looks like nothing more than ‘Well if I can’t have it, then you can’t either’.

loss of validation 1

loss of validation 2

We all know that violet wands are not related to e-stim, but the unconscionable greed and pettiness of one individual, combined with the vanilla layperson lack of understanding of violet wands by wiki administrators, has reduced the Rolls Royce of BDSM toys into permanently being just a minor subset of e-stim.  Violet wands are the EPITOME, the APEX of BDSM toys and techniques!  Will newbies ever get interested in violet wands now, if they read on wikipedia that violet wands are just a tiny and unremarkable part of estim?  Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face!

Once the violet wand article is merged with the e-stim article, all of the revision records to the original violet wand article will be removed from wikipedia.  No one will be able to see the contributions made to the article over the past 14 years, by such notable names in violet wands as Lady Robin, Violetwanda, Hogtied, DecryptedNight, OldFart, DMT etc…those were just a few of the names I recognized in the wiki records, and some of those old guard people are now lost to us. The original article recognized the now deceased Donnie Rice’s important contributions, and Laura Antoniou’s–our most awarded kink writer–use of the violet wand in her fiction.  Their public-eye work on wikipedia is gone too,a  loss of validation for our important violet wand contributors and our most noted author.

Yes, some people destroy, as we sadly see here with this vandalism, done by a used item salesman just to spite community volunteers and educators.  But most people create. Many more creators and helpers and givers exist…look for them.
Please don’t think that this one-person act to take down a valuable information resource is representative of the violet wand community as a whole- you will find many giving people who are committed to spreading education and information and showing the kink world every amazing thing that violet wands can do. Violet wands ARE amazing, violet wands ARE NOT just a bit of e-stim…..do NOT stop there.
