A violet wand is a modified Tesla-coil type electrical transformer.  There are other Tesla-coil type devices that are related to the violet wand that look very similar.  Even the attachments can be similar.  The differences though, can be significant to a violet wand user.

The Violet Ray

This is the grand-daddy of them all, the antique violet ray.  These are all antiques and come with significant electrodes and accessories made for treating the human body of various ailments and diseases.  Primarily for collectors, they can be stunning artifacts and beautiful pieces.

Being antiques as much as 90 years old, they will be found in various states of repair.   Do not trust your safety and life to 90 year old wiring 'as is'.  There were no electrical safety standards when these were made and they are ungrounded, a dangerous mix with high voltage.

It is dangerous and irresponsible to use on someone, and foolish to let someone use an antique on you.  If you have one, get it completely serviced, brought up to safety standard through rewiring and grounding, and given a clean bill of health by an expert if you want to use an antique violet ray quack medical device on someone else.  There are experts in both the US and UK who can do this for you.  

Violet ray electrodes that originally came with these are fragile soda-lime glass. While they are visually stunning with all their amazing shapes, they can not take the use or abuse that modern violet wand electrodes can, since real violet wand electrodes are built to take extremes and these were not.  You can not insert these fragile glass electrodes, for example, but violet wand electrodes, while appearing similar, are specifically manufactured to be insertable and to a specific electrical resistance meant for erotic and kinky stimulation.

Violet Rays -all- also have rolled wax-paper capacitors (the dreaded 'wax cores!') and need to have the capacitors replaced with modern equivalents if you intend to use them for anything over 10 minutes at a time.  You can use a restored violet ray that has been brought up to safety standard, as a violet wand, but you will not get the same range of techniques from violet wands and wand accessories, which are specifically made for electroplay.

How to tell:  Its old.

Verdict:  Wonderful to collect!  Its an absolute MUST to have it re-wired completely, and have the capacitor replaced if you intend to include it occasionally as part of your violet wand arsenal to enhance your repertoire.  But use your violet wand instead of abusing your antique.
