Aside from a violet wand, what are the accessories you can't do without?
I would amend that question slightly, and have it read 'Aside from the violet wand and electrodes, what are the accessories you can't do without?' Primarily because you can't really do without violet wand electrodes, as all Direct techniques are based on them. Without glass violet wand electrodes, you may as well just grab your wand by the cord and beat someone with it. A violet wand without electrodes is like having a car without fuel, a computer without software, Anita Bryant without orange juice...you get the picture.
But in my opinion, there are two accessories that are must haves--- because with just having these two on hand, you increase your range and available techniques exponentially. Take your time collecting other violet wand accessories if you like, but get these two as soon as you can, preferably at the same time you get your violetwand. And as always, go for quality and durability of the manufacturer-made items, not the cheap knock offs. It may not seem obvious why you don't want to obtain or use jury-rigged electrical components, after all they are less expensive. Short version explanation: safety. This is high voltage electricity you're playing with, and a homemade component isn't adequate for safety. For the in-depth reasons, I'll explain why.
1. Body Contact Probe
The Body Contact Probe is required for 2/3 of all the basic violet wand techniques. That means all the Reverse and Indirect techniques are done primarily with this accessory. If you don't have one, you are only using 1/3 of the capability of your violet wand and missing out on the majority of what you could be doing. Be picky when it comes to these. One reason to be picky is that the best ones carry the charge through the cord at full power, while the poor quality auction homemade knock-offs bleed electricity and lose too much charge along the way by the time it gets to your victim. These poorer or lower-rated insulation (and sometimes NON-existent insulation) also give you quite a kickback shock when you're using them or you bump into the uninsulated or poorly insulated cord.
| The DOs | The DO NOTs |
|---|---|
| High voltage rated cable that is also flexible | ballchain, lamp cord, speaker wire, cord that is too stiff to be flexible |
| Brass caps and connectors | steel caps and connectors |
|
Spark gap |
|
| LOOK FOR: thickly insulated cable, brass (goldtone) endcaps, and the distinctive buzz of a spark gap | STAY AWAY FROM: thinly insulated wire, silvertone caps and connectors, no separate sound coming from the cable. |
2. The Lightbulb Adaptor
You do need violet wand electrodes, those glowing glass tubes made specifically for violetwand play. They can take the abuse that kinkelectrical play requires, since they are made of strong, tempered glass and you can use them internally because of their built-in safety factors. But for really expanding your base of Direct techniques that dont require pressure, insertion etc, and when all you want is the spark, a Lightbulb Adaptor is indeed, a necessity. Where the Body Contact Probe increased the range of your techniques, the Lightbulb Adaptor increases the range of your tools. It turns lightbulbs into violetwand electrodes, and your nearest home improvement store has hundreds you can use to amazing effect. I can not stress enough to get them from a manufacturer rather than a knock-off seller, as Joe Homemadeauctiontoys only copies what he can see, and does not have access to specs to know what's going on inside a properly engineered Lightbulb Adaptor.
| The DOs | The DO NOTs |
|---|---|
| ceramic | plastic |
| one-piece kiln-fired | several pieces cobbled together from lamp parts |

steel or other silvertone connector cap |
| LOOK FOR: heavy one-piece construction | STAY AWAY FROM: appearance of separate pieces glued together. |

This manufacturer product is constructed of one-piece ceramic to provide adequate insulation. Ceramic allows the whole charge to travel to your destination, and prohibits electrical leakage. The interior components that you cant see, are wired from the connector to the lightbulb, and the wiring and the connector are kiln-fired right into the ceramic-- making a one-piece unit. A spark gap exists in between the connector and the wiring for safety. The brass connector has higher electrical conductivity, and is made to size spec to fit your violet wand perfectly. |
Joe Homemadetoys has cobbled together three lamp parts for this homemade adaptor. The top and bottom are plastic lamp parts glued together, so there is signficant electrical leakage. If you look close you can see where the glue squeezed out. There is no spark gap built into the adaptor, as this is not made for a violetwand, its made for a lamp. The connector is a hollow steel lamp conduit filed down by hand to take the threading off. Steel is far less conductive so you're getting a much weaker output. And with the threading not successfully all removed, inserting this one with its remaining threading would scrape down the inside of your expensive violetwand 's collet. |
