Tag Team: Violetwanda and Dralion

tag team
noun
noun: tag team; plural noun: tag teams
a pair of wrestlers who fight as a team, taking the ring alternately. One team member cannot enter the ring until touched or tagged by the one leaving.
North American informal: a pair of people working together.

Both definitions fit the husband and wife team of Violetwanda and Dralion. Out of the few people who do email me because of this directory and my blog, the thing I get asked about most, is not  ‘What kind of violet wand should I get?’  (Answer: That is totally up to you and your preferences.) And its not ‘Why does my violet wand cut out?’ (Answer: That’s part of what you should consider regarding your preferences about what kind of violet wand to get.)

No, it’s ‘what do you think about Violetwanda?‘ without mentioning the genius half ot the tag team. Dralion invented pretty much every violet wand toy that you’re using, even if you didn’t get it from them he gave birth to it. Back before violet wands became popular there were just a few people starting to use them.  There were no ‘accessories’, just some glass electrodes. Carter Stevens and John Warren sold the old wax-capacitor Master Electric models. I saw my first violet wand at one of Carter Stevens big Poconos retreats and nobody bought it from his merchandising table for the whole long weekend.  There was just the one, and no one was even curious. Flash forward a year or two and BWANG suddenly Violetwanda is center stage, and she and Dralion have invented accessories that make violet wand play exciting, and coming up with techniques to use the new accessories.  It was like the discovery of Atlantis and we all ate it up. Every written piece on violet wand techniques started right there with them in that moment.

They had a difficult time keeping up with the demand but they had everyone’s support and soon that support grew into thousands. Then those thousands made The International Violet Wand Guild and set standards and good safety practices and definitions. Violetwanda and Dralion were at the center of it.  The Guild would ask them if ‘such and such’ would be possible and Dralion would invent a violet wand product to do it. The Guild would ask and Violetwanda and Dralion would take it to their drawing board and come back with something that would be explored and expanded by hundreds of new violet wand lovers.  They trained demonstrators when there were no violet wand classes or seminars or demonstrators before, and then the Guild took over the training as they grew to have no spare time at all in the ocean of violet wand excitement.

A lot of us miss that golden age of discovery.  It was energized and exciting. It must be how Usenet felt when people were excited to find that they could talk anonymously to other kinky folk on this new ‘world wide web’, and BDSM was born (the anacronym) and they set standards and practices like ‘Safe Sane Consensual’ and came up with the triskelion logo, and put names to techniques and fetishes that had no names before. And we still use all that today even though Usenet eventually evolved into other things. And like those days of Usenet, we still use all Violet Wand Guild’s definitions and practices and names and standards even though the Violet Wand Guild also eventually evolved into other things.

So why the history? Because without Violetwanda and Dralion we would have none of it. Yeah maybe someone would eventually, but research and development takes commitment and resources. And the two of them were committed.  And still are. Almost 20 years later they continue, though they have evolved too. Nobody so far has been able to do what they do. They make things nobody else can make. And they are still in high demand.

Now, Dralion is the nicest guy you will ever meet. He will give you the shirt off his back and the violet wand out of his own bag. He’s a genius at making ideas come to fruition. His background is in electrical and medical antiques, and if you come across a working violet ray or xray or diathermy or magneto in a certain medical museum in Pennsylvania, he kept them working, and if you find a Kovel’s printed price guide with these in it, he set those valuations.

So now that you have some backstory, I’ll give you the answer to my question so that you know why my answer is what it is: What do I (as in my opinion) think about Violetwanda?  You either love her or you hate her. She is very up front about how her company runs. If you expect her company to run like other companies, you will not be happy.  If you try to get her to do something your way you will not be happy.  But… if you let Violetwanda be the violet wand expert and do it her way, you will be thrilled. And that…as Forrest Gump said..is all I have to say about that.
