Related Devices

A violet wand is a modified Tesla-coil type electrical transformer.  There are other Tesla-coil type devices that are related to the violet wand that look very similar.  Even the attachments can be similar.  The differences though, can be significant to a violet wand user.  Arm yourself with information so you aren’t disappointed.

Violet rays are always antiques1. The Violet Ray

This is the grand-daddy of them all, the antique violet ray.  These are all antiques and come with significant electrodes and accessories made for treating the human body of various ailments and diseases.  Primarily for collectors, they can be stunning artifacts and beautiful pieces.

Being antiques as much as 90 years old, they will be found in various states of repair.   Do not trust your safety and life to 90 year old wiring ‘as is’.  There were no electrical safety standards when these were made and they are ungrounded, a dangerous mix with high voltage.

It is dangerous and irresponsible to use on someone, and foolish to let someone use an antique on you without having it thoroughly checked and preferably rewired to modern safety.  If you have one, get it completely serviced, brought up to safety standard through rewiring and grounding, and given a clean bill of health by an expert if you want to use an antique violet ray quack medical device on someone else.  There are experts in both the US and UK who can do this for you.

Violet ray electrodes that originally came with these are fragile soda-lime glass. While they are visually stunning with all their amazing shapes, they can not take the use or abuse that modern violet wand electrodes can, since real violet wand electrodes are built to take extremes and these were not.  You can not insert these fragile glass electrodes, for example, but violet wand electrodes, while appearing similar, are specifically manufactured to be insertable and to a specific electrical resistance meant for erotic and kinky stimulation.

Violet Rays -all- also have rolled wax-paper capacitors (the dreaded ‘wax cores!’) and need to have the capacitors replaced with modern equivalents if you intend to use them for anything over 10 minutes at a time.  You can use a restored violet ray that has been brought up to safety standard, as a violet wand, but you will not get the same range of techniques from violet wands and wand accessories, which are specifically made for electroplay.

How to tell:  Its old.

Verdict:  Wonderful to collect!  Its an absolute MUST to have it re-wired completely, and have the capacitor replaced if you intend to include it occasionally as part of your violet wand arsenal to enhance your repertoire.  But use your violet wand instead of abusing your antique.

violet ray wiring is antique

2. The High Frequency

High Frequency beauty devices are modern made machines which also were based on antique violet rays.  They are made by and for the beauty industry to treat the skin and scalp.  You can go into any full-service spa and get a high frequency facial, and there are some portable versions such as this one shown.

Sizes and frequency differ widely, but the output is low, low, low since they are made to pamper women getting facial massages.  Portable beauty high-frequency devices all made outside of the US, hence the difficulty in sizing to American  violet wands.   Some machines may be able to accept violet wand electrodes.  However, the output of these beauty high frequency devices is often much less than 10kv, which means always just a very light tingling. Some provide no sensation at all.  This makes them unacceptable for kinky play, but great for treating your acne.

Unscrupulous kink sellers can try to pawn one of these high frequencies off on you, since they are easy to come by from any beauty supplier.  One example of a violet wand ‘fake’ was the short-lived ‘iWAND’.  This high frequency device was sold on the kink market during 2007 until kinky consumers received their packages and were disgusted by the lack of output.  Once they got wise to the seller, he had to turn to selling a violetwand ‘ebook’ in another effort to pull the wool over unsuspecting eyes.

But no matter how they might try to look like them, these imposters are not violet wands.  You won’t be able to do all the violet wand techniques with them.  A white body such as shown in this picture often means a vanilla beauty product.  If its called ‘a high frequency’ its not made for kink.

Electrodes for the beauty devices are always soda-lime glass and very fragile, but can come in interesting shapes.   You might find some of these metric electrodes close to the 7/16″ violetwand size and be able to use them with your violet wand, though you will need to be much more careful of breakage with them than you would have to be with violet wand electrodes.  They just can’t take the abuse that real violet wand electrodes are built for.

How to tell:  Its white and has no bite.

Verdict:  Far too soft.  Electrodes are problematic.  Great for your skin and scalp so keep it in your bathroom closet where it belongs.

vanilla is not for violetwands

violetwands have long-run capacitors so you can use them more than 10 minutes 3. The Leak Detector

Leak detectors are another device based on the Tesla coil violet ray machine of the past.  These come with labels right on them that say to use them no longer than 10 minutes at a time or you will damage the coil over time.  (and here it is again, the dreaded 10 minute ‘Wax Core’ capacitor) that will burn out on you too soon.

They also come with a label on them that says DO NOT COME INTO CONTACT WITH THE SPARK.   See faustopheles’ page for a bit more info about this. His article gets a little confusing because he calls –everything— a violet wand but he explains perfectly well why a leak detector is not safe to use as a violet wand, and he explains a bit about what you could do to try to make one safer.

If you suspect your ‘violet wand’ seller may be trying to pass you a leak detector with its 10-minute capacitor  just by taking off the labels, ask them about it.   A proper violet wand, engineered for kinky play with an extended capacitor and ground-wired to neutral, should run for hours without harm to its coils, so you need have no fear of it dying after a few short months.  Usually a tip-off to these ‘wax cores*’ is a scary-short warranty period from the seller,  which is intended just to get you through those first few months.  Another tip-off is a price that is significantly below that of the reputable violet wand companies.

Proper violet wands should have a capacitor that allows you a MINIMUM 1 hour run time without needing to cool down.  Capacitors can vary, but there are violet wands with capacitors rated for up to 8 hours at a stretch, so 1 hour is a bare minimum you should insist on from a violet wand capacitors.  And–most importantly– a proper violet wand is ground wired to neutral for safety.

Some good news though, leak detectors are American made, so they do accept violet wand electrodes.

How to tell:  The manufacturer is shown on the butt end.

Verdict:  If you’re going to use one, follow faustopheles’ directions for checking the ground!!!  Otherwise if the current runs to ground while you’re playing with someone with a leak detector, it could be fatal.  THEN– AFTER you know your ground is correct, If you don’t mind playing for only 10 minutes at a time, be my guest.  But educate yourself so you don’t get stuck with something that wears out before your bottom partner does.

dont be fooled by violet wand imposters

tesla coils are coil types that Nichola Tesla invented. 4. The Tesla Coil

The tesla coil is a super geek’s science project.  But, it is a similar type of electrical coil configuration that runs a violet wand.  Tesla coils have much, much higher voltage and the primary and secondary is reversed over a violet wand’s electrical coils.  Not portable, though small kit sizes are available.

Not to be messed with.  They can cause death unless you know what you’re doing, and it takes a -LOT- to know what you are doing with them.

How to tell:  It looks like a movie prop.

Verdict:  Leave it to the geeks.

i love science

same principle, but these are not violet wands5. Plasma balls, plasma lights, and neon signs.

All of these lighting fixtures use a transformer in much the same way a violet wand does.  In fact, plasma balls and other plasma lights have the same type of visual display that a violet wand does.  There are some neat tricks that you can do with plasma lights, like light up nearby fluorescent tube lights, or get the sparks to travel.  But you don’t get any feeling from them, and you can’t use violet wand tools and accessories or any violet wand techniques with them.

How to tell:  You had one in your college dorm.

Verdict:  Use them to create some ambience in your dungeon.

same plasma technology, but these are not violetwands6. Plasma Screens

Yes, plasma tv screens are technologically- related to violet wands due to the fact that they use high voltage electricity to electrically excite an enclosed gas, causing the gas to glow.  This electrical current exciting a gas and causing it to glow colors, is precisely what is happening within a glass violet wand electrode.  But you wouldn’t pick up a television and run it along someone’s spine to get them tingling.   In other words, just because it uses the same technology, doesn’t mean you want what they are trying to sell you.

Educate yourself so that you can be sure you’re getting a bonafide violetwand.

Verdict:  Get and use the right tool for the job and you won’t be disappointed.

You know -a lot of people use all these things for kink. Some people call the old ones and the beauty ones all ‘violet wands’. But we will use anything for kink. we use train transformers, telephone coils, car batteries. we are always glad that people are making sAFE kinky electrical toys because playing with train transformers can be dangerous even deadly. Even though people do it, doesn’t mean they should.

That can’t be right. Your tv just can’t be related to violet wands. The other things I understand, but TV?

yes.  Plasma tv.  Gas that is excited by electricity ionizes- becomes ‘plasma’.  That’s the glow on your tv and its the glow inside violet wand electrodes.

That has got nothing to do with anything, your post is spam and I reported it. You ruin good articles and community with spam. Violet wand topics only.

That is so truth. We all like to save money and get away with paying the less that we can. But you have to make safety your TOP priority.
